Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is reportedly on the verge of a shock return to the Premier League after emerging as a target for both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
According to the Daily Star, the two north London outfits are keen on securing Sarri’s services next season. Sarri, who also coached Napoli and Juventus, could be appointed as a replacement for Mikel Arteta should the Spaniard be relieved of his duties after a dismal season.
Arteta guided Arsenal to the FA Cup trophy in his first season in charge but has since come under fire as the Gunners finished eighth league and crashed out of the Europa League in the semifinals at the hands of Villarreal CF, managed by his predecessor Unai Emery.
Sarri, whose previous spell in England came in 2018-19 when he was appointed as Antonio Conte’s successor, went on to win the Europa League before departing London to join Juventus. Sarri has been out of work since leaving Juventus. He was previously linked to AS Roma until they appointed Jose Mourinho.
Spurs are also interested in luring Sarri to White Hart Lane. Spurs are on the lookout for a permanent manager to take over from Ryan Mason, who was appointed caretaker boss till the end of the campaign after the club sacked Jose Mourinho.
Both North London clubs are expected to face stiff competition for Sarri’s signature with AC Milan also monitoring his situation.
