When England were one penalty away from making it to the Last 8 of the World Cup, all eyes were on Jamie Vardy. The Leicester City striker was expected to take the fifth and final penalty vs Colombia, but it was Eric Dier who stepped up.
The Tottenham star scored, and England made it through, but a lot was said about Vardy. Many questioned his confidence and were making fun of him on social media. Reports have now emerged that the striker picked up an injury towards the very end of the game and that’s the reason why he did not take a penalty.
“Dier wasn’t supposed to take that decisive fifth penalty. Vardy, the man who takes penalties regularly for Leicester, was down to take it but he picked up a groin strain towards the very end of extra-time so massive credit to Dier.”Sky Sports News’ Rob Dorsett said.
Vardy is now doubtful for the next game where England take on Sweden. The injury will be a big concern for Gareth Southgate as Harry Kane, and Dele Alli are also said to be carrying some injury.
Alli just came back from a thigh problem and was seen struggling on the pitch towards the end of the first half. He was expected to be replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek at half-time, but he came out after the break as well. Meanwhile, Kane was seen holding his back during the match.
Ashley Young and Kyle Walker also suffered cramp towards the end of the game but are expected to be fit for the clash vs Sweden.
